This post is totally not an essay, but it is relevant. I discovered the Bing AI image generator, which is powered by Dall-e. Now listen, I understand AI art is a controversial subject at the very least. I’m not even sure I have a position on it yet.
On the one hand, we live in a society where people MUST profit to survive. So using art that borrows from another artist is definitely problematic. Especially if that art is then used for profit. Because people are commodifying AI art every day.
On the other hand, any new art form is ALWAYS decried. What people can do via automation is amazing. I think AI art is here to stay and it will have a place. It will make professional animation even more efficient. And the best artists will still separate themselves.
Ultimately, I think it is a neat tool that is going to be exploited but that will be a minority issue. What am I using it for? I’m running a D&D campaign and I want assets for the game. To enhance my players’ experience. Am I part of the problem? Maybe so.
I included some of the pieces I was able to create that I’ll use as visual aids during our Roll 20 session. It has made making maps SO much faster and I still have to go in and manipulate them, I just have a solid foundation.
