Summer has been very hectic and will continue to be, but that isn’t the only reason I’ve been lighter on this side of the internet. The biggest time sink I’ve had is a different substack called Apophis’ Workshop. We just put out our first digest and it would be cool if you check it out:
This is a fiction zine that I created with a handful of other writers and I’m stoked to share the first issue. The stories all live on the substack as well and are published weekly, but this is probably the best introduction to the writing. The cover was created by Marc Sterling, who you may remember from a post a while back.
I have a serial piece that has a new part every two weeks. I do have other pieces I’m working on for later issues, but I have really enjoyed getting my fiction out into a public space with regularity. Plus, the other writers are excellent and their pieces I find rewarding. I hope you’ll check it out and maybe subscribe. If for nothing else than to give some writers some love.
Beyond that, I am seeing Superman tonight. I’ve never been a huge Supes fan, but I’m looking forward to seeing it with ten friends. And to see our local theater’s new arcade/Duck-pin bowling lane. And to eat at their new concession stand that is finally open. It’s a weekly treat for me to get to not have to cook AND to eat junk food.
Next week my nephew will be here and then we are off to Greece for two weeks. It’s a whirlwind summer and it feels like it is over before it even began. That’s kind of how the rest of this year feels. I don’t know if I’m just keeping myself distracted from the world or if I am just trying to enjoy this country for as long as I’m able. I think it’s a little of both.
It’s hard to not look at the state of the world and question what the future of America will be. Bleak, in the short term, but I think there’s some long overdue correction coming and it gives me hope for the future. Maybe American can one day be great for the first time. It’s just going to be a long road to get there.
We have a full slate for the rest of the year. An anniversary party at the end of August. A trip to Gainesville for the 23rd edition of Fest. The holidays lead right into the board game cruise. I’m spending more time in Florida than I’d like, but I guess if you’re experiencing America you take the good with the bad.
In between all of that I am DMing a D&D campaign every other Thursday and hoping to finish out Frosthaven before next March.
I’ll let you know what I think of Superman soon and I hope everyone out there is doing the best they can.
Your hope of America finally being great for the first time sounds So Good. Hoping for that with what little hope I have left.
